At Nerospec SK, we are proud to play a key role in Rio Tinto’s ambitious Collision Avoidance System (CAS) program, an initiative launched in 2020 to elevate underground mining safety standards across their global operations.
Following a comprehensive company-wide VICE assessment, Rio Tinto identified a critical need for robust engineering controls, including Vehicle Intervention Technology Solutions (VITS). This led to a focused development effort beginning in 2022 at the Kennecott Underground copper mine in Utah.
Recognizing the need for a flexible and future-proof platform, Rio Tinto partnered with Nerospec SK to deploy our industry-leading NeroHUB. This system serves as an intelligent interface between multiple vehicle types and a variety of proximity detection systems (PDS), ensuring seamless communication and safe operation underground.
Throughout 2023, Rio Tinto conducted rigorous testing, evaluating three vehicle types across three PDS vendors. Ultimately, PBE Axell’s PDS was selected for its consistency, reliability, and ability to avoid operational disruptions like unexpected vehicle stops or erratic movements.
By late 2024, around 15 vehicles at Kennecott had been fully equipped with the CAS solution. Preparations are now underway at Oyu Tolgoi in Mongolia, one of the world’s largest and most complex underground mining operations, where installations will begin in 2025.
Looking ahead, Rio Tinto plans to install CAS across approximately 120 vehicles at Kennecott and over 450 vehicles at Oyu Tolgoi, covering a diverse fleet from major OEMs such as Sandvik, Epiroc, and Normet, along with light vehicles.
The program emphasizes not only vehicle-to-person safety but also full mine-wide interoperability, aligning with the stringent EMESRT Level 9 standards.
